Well, I was talking to a guy in one of my classes and he told me about a place that sell ground raw meat(with bone & veggies) for dogs. Now, I *love* the raw diet, but the cost around here is just insane.... and I don't have the space in any means to "stock up" when I find stuff on sale.... so it just wasn't an option. I figured the place he was talking about would probably be the same, but I checked it out anyway.
It turns out I can get chicken for $1.20/lb and lamb, beef, duck, & turkey for $1.50/lb. Ground beef organs are $2.50/lb. They come in 2lb tubes and 5lb tubes. Now this is something I can do! it's a low steady price and I can buy it in sizes that I can store. The other good thing, is that Muffin isn't a big fan of really chewing on bones... he chews on them yes, but he doesn't really really chew on them.... this the ground ensures that he gets calcium.
I bought a 2lb duck last week, and Muffin is in love. So, I bought chicken, duck, and lamb today. I also bought 1lb of the ground organs. I chopped the meat mixtures up into 1/2lb sizes and put them in their own bags. I chopped the organ meat into 1/8lb sizes and put them in with the meat pieces that came out a little on the small side.
I think what I'll be doing is soaking some kibble in goat's milk and feeding that as breakfast(if he doesn't go for this than breakfast will be kibble and pumpkin and the milk will go with dinner), and then giving him the raw as dinner. Once he gets up to an ideal weight(he's almost there, only a pound or two more needed), I'll cut out the kibble and maybe keep the goat's milk or maybe cut that out too. Then I will just need to try to figure out how much he needs of raw daily to maintain his weight...
Wash has been eating raw his entire life, so for him the biggest thing will prob be going from having bones he has to crunch on every meal to only having bones when I buy him unground chicken. I'll prob also be picking up chicken, turkey, & duck necks as they sell at the place I got the raw meat from...
I'm very excited about this as I absolutely LOVE the raw diet! It was just very unpractical for me before.
